Academic Training Overview
Academic Training Overview

In addition to career training, Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps Center also provides academic training, including basic reading and math. Courses in independent living, employability skills, and career success skills are offered in order to help students transition into the workplace. We also have several academic programs to help our students achieve their full potential.

Educational Programs

JOB CORPS IS A VERY STRUCTURED ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL PREPARE YOU FOR THE WORKPLACE.

GED/High School Diploma

One of our top goals at Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps is to ensure that every qualified student obtains his or her GED/high school diploma prior to leaving the center. Students who don't already have a high school diploma upon their arrival at Hubert H. Humphrey can enroll in our GED school program. Students may also participate in our high school diploma program which is paid for by the center.

Leadership Training Program

The Leadership Training Program is modeled after city government and provides a basic overview of government, committees, meetings, and town hall gatherings so students can develop their leadership skills. To qualify for this training program, students must show they are mature and have leadership potential. The program itself takes place after school hours but is open to all our students.

Tutoring

Tutoring programs are available where students are tutored in math, reading, social studies, and writing by instructors or by fellow students (Peer Student Tutors). Students interested in getting into a tutoring program may contact their instructors or the Academic Manager.

College Program

Our students have the opportunity to attend college through our center's Advanced Career Training (ACT) program. To be eligible for the ACT program, a student must have been at our center for at least six months, have completed a career technical training program, and earned a GED or high school diploma. Our center offers a wide range of advanced diploma, certificate, and associate's degree programs through Minneapolis Community and Technical College, St. Paul Technical College, Century College, and Inver Hills Community College. Benefits of the College Program include: • academic advisement, mentoring, and tutoring • paid tuition, fees, books, and supplies • housing and recreation • meals provided by Job Corps, on-and-off center • transportation to and from college of choice

English Language Learning

Students needing to learn English can enter our English Language Learning (ELL) program. Students in the ELL program are tested regularly to determine their language proficiency levels.

Driver Education

Driver's Education is available to all students needing their driver's license.

Career Success Standard

Ten Behavioral expectation in the areas of employment, social development, and independent living skills.

The way we prepare you for the workforce has changed during Job Corps’ 40 years. The growth of new technology, its impact on your education and the workplace, and the surge in various high-growth industries continuously creates new opportunities to learn and grow. Job Corps is responding to this opportunity with the Career Success Standards, a set of ten behavioral expectations in the areas of employability, social development, and independent living skills.
